Where kids are bombarded with the luring advertisements of
unhealthy food, it is really important to make them aware of the pitfalls.
Teachers believe that it is the responsibility of the parents to make the kids
aware of the pitfalls of eating junk and unhealthy food. But why do teachers
expect only the parents to do their bit? It is the responsibility of the teachers
too to make the kids realize the importance of choosing the healthy food.
Teachers can even monitor what the child get in their lunch box.
As a teacher you must encourage children to make a shopping
list of their choice if they were to go alone for the grocery shopping. The
list will give you a fair idea about the child likes. Then ask them to prepare
a healthy shopping list that excludes food items that contain high fructose
corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. The teachers can let out a secret that
children must try and pick the products that have easy to pronounce
ingredients.
Teachers must make the kids understand that the
shelf-friendly items are high in sugar, fat and sodium and the child must make
sure these are moderated not only in their diet but also their family’s diet. Teachers
must try and e
ncourage children to buy brighter, fresher
and colorful food as they will be rich in minerals, vitamins and other
essential nutrients. Let out the secret to the kids that if the food can stay
unrefrigerated, it surely doesn’t belong to your body. It will only add the
calories and weight and lack the necessary nutrients
Once a month teachers can encourage the kids to
cook something nutritious for the family. Encourage kids to make bowl of salad
or easy snack that doesn’t involve the use of burning gas. Replace cheese and
butter with healthy peanut butter fats. They make for the complete meal and
nutritional needs of the body. Encourage kids to make their own trail mix using
cashews, peanuts, raisins, almonds, dried cranberries and other fruits.
